Hi guys!

Several of you have mentioned that London Airport online can be a pretty "lonely" airport.

Here's a thought; what if we could get 4 or 5 of you together at a predetermined time. 3 or 4 would fly while one does ATC (maybe 20 minutes to 1/2 hour) then shift change.
Everyone would be on teamspeak with one or more Instructors.
You would get the experience from both perspectives. Possibly could include some flight instruction if desired.

Blue Skies!
Colin

That's a good idea! When I was training at CYXU, when people notice GND, TWR on, you can get a lot of traffic.

I think keeping the number of students low would be important. With 5 of you, controlling for 20 minutes apiece, that still means each one needs to be in the air for 80 minutes. I'm not sure how many would be content to fly circuits for that long. Non-circuit VFR flight could be more fun, however – having planes constantly leaving and re-entering the circuit could prove more interesting for both the controller and the pilots.

Not to mention, scheduling becomes considerably harder with higher numbers to coordinate, unless you just pick the same time every week, and see who shows up. You could give them first-come, first-serve for controlling, as incentive to show up on time.

Some flight instruction for those in the air might be just enough of a carrot. Perhaps you could train the pilots in the air to perform the duties of the Flying Circus while the controller on the ground is learning how to deal with said circus? :)

And don't forget CYXS and CYQR, to break up the tedium a little. Could rotate them each week. On that note, is any S2 allowed to control at those airports, or only students from their respective FIRs?

I am willing to let any NTU students go to YQR if needed, as Long as they drop me a quick email so I can send them some local info.

Hey guys. This sounds like a real good idea. I know everyone's schedules are different, but if you could coordinate it so 'class' is at the same time every week, I'm sure you could get a number of non-students flying in and out of CYXU (you could also pick a different airport each week, as long as its publicized). I love to fly short hauls in and out of training airports to help new controllers gain experience.

As always, I think the key is regularity so people know when to find you on and plan to be there then. Just make sure its publicized as a regular shift too, and you'll see the traffic appear.

Just my 2 cents.

Eldon and various aiders and abettors had a very successful impromptu session at London on a Sunday afternoon.
Let's start with Sunday as a premise and see if we can arrive at a common time.
Anyone have an alternative day?
How about 15:00 EDT (1900Z). Not too early for west coasters, nor too late for Eastern and Maritime Time Zones.
Thoughts?

That works for me for the next month at least. Looking forward to it.

If you want training controllers to experience and practice tough non-audio texting environment in busy air space before taking examinations, I can fly but I like to fly between 7 pm EST and 10 pm EST. I am sure some of you controllers know what and why I mean by words "non-audio texting environment".

I can be available on Wednesday evenings for testing training controllers by flying to London Airport (not to be confused with british airport).

Warning I type faster than any jet flighter's engine:):):)
